Do Hollywood endorsements matter?

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol
10.25.2012

- from foxnews

This article's topic is Do Hollywood endorsements matter? and they answered a question; Do they matter? Can celebrity appearances, endorsements and emails move the needle? The article's answer is "it depends". It says that people "don't want to think Hollywood celebrities are telling them how to vote. They understand their expertise is outside the political world". However, there are exceptions, and Oprah Winfrey is one. She made many politicians famous including Barack Obama. The other exception is that celebrities can give a boost with certain targeted audiences. Both Romney and Obama has many celebrities who help them.

I think celebrities helps a lot. I don't know about U.S., but in Korea, celebrities impacts a lot. Of course there are many people who don't get any influence by celebrities, but more people get influence by them. So i think it will be beneficial if candidates make celebrities to their team.

Yemeni protesters try to break through the U.S. embassy in Sanaa during a protest on September 13.

This article is about the death of a security official for U.S. Embassy in Yemen, Qassem Aqlan. He was shot dead on his way to walk. The article says that the killing of Qassem Aqlan shows the hallmarks of al Qaeda. It also says that Gunmen was on a motorcycle, and motorcycle attacks are currently al Qaeda's main tactic. This article says that al Qaeda is sanding message by Aqlan's death. the message is that if you are working with the Americans you will be targeted no matter who you are.

I was very sad about the death of Aqlan. It is very scary thing. I surprised that al Qaeda was still acting, because I thought that they were dead or having time for long rest after Bin Laden's death. I think many people will quit their job because of the message that al Qaeda sent. that is very scary. I hope no more people would die like this.

-What Each Candidate Must Do to Win

 from Fox News

Obama and Romney Speaking
This article is about what Romney and Obama must do to win on this presidential debate. It first says about Obama. According to this article, Obama is good in a platform speech, but most people who are good at long speech are not that good at do speech quickly, so he needs to be careful of that. This article also says that “His job here is to not cede ground and avoid any huge errors. He can win this by not losing, he will play a more cautions game, defend what he has done, acknowledge difficulties and detail plans”.

This article says about Romney that "this is his opportunity to change the trajectory of the campaign and re-shift the focus back on the economy". Also, in this article, Masket said that “I expect him to attack Obama on economic issues ... He also needs to work to rehabilitate his own image after the fallout of the '47%' comment caught on camera.” He didn't provide enough details his policy ideas and campaign goals, so he need to specify his plans. It also says Romney has to work to shape his answers to fit the time allotment while providing enough specifics and details. At the last ,he needs to "redirect the analysis and point it to what he cares about, show his level of credibility and detail his promise".

- 10 Rules for Winning a Debate

from CNN

Paul Begala says he's played a behind-the-scenes role in most of the presidential debates of the past 20 years.

This article says that to win the debate, people have to remember 10 rules. those 10 rules are 1. Debates are easy, so relax- debates are easier than news conferences, town-hall meetings or in-depth, one-on-one interviews on Sunday morning television. 2. Have one message that answers on "Why should we vote for you and not the other candidate?", 20 questions and 20 answers that supports that message. 3. Be familiar with everything related to the debate- familiarity brings comfort, comfort breeds confidence, and confidence delivers victory. 4. Don't cram. 5. Wit is sticky. 6. Remember that camera is always on- always be conscious of camera, and know what to do when the other candidate is attacking you. 7. Create a moment- give a direct address, fixing eyes on their opponent when launching a barb or looking directly into the camera. 8. Don't be a lawyer- structure that use in legal argument an political debate is different. 9. Small people make small points- have big points. 10. Debates are more often lost than win- have self-confidence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both articles were about how to win on this presidential debate, and the first one, from Fox News, is talking about two separated candidates, Romney and Obama. and the second one, from CNN, didn't separate them. It was interesting to read both articles and know about how would be the debate. Actually these two articles doesn't have any side. But the article from Fox New  is saying specifically what each person should do to win the election. But the article from CNN was talking about "Debate". It is saying about presidential debate, and it gave some examples from ancestors, but I think those rules also can be used on usual debate.
