Number of hagwon in Seoul in decline

This article is about number of private learning institution in Seoul. In Korea, people call the private learning institution as "hagwon". Numbers of those hagwons are decreasing, because of long term economic slow down. Also, government's policy that encourages people to learn at school instead of hagwon, by after school programs. Many hagwons, mostly in Gangnam district, has declined from 13,352 to 13,208 in a year. Observer says the decreasing hagwans shows the increasing burden on households from private educations, and Korea's declining birth rate.

There are many people who like and dislike hagwons. I think their reason to like them is because they can know more about what they are studying, and get a good grade on the exams because hagwons manage children to study. But I think people dislike it is because it is sometimes too expensive, and children might, actually is, feel bored during class time. I'm in kind of middle side, because if hagwons do their studies right after students learn in school, the children may not be bored during class time. By reading this article, I understood better about district.

Ahn urges his supporters to back opposition presidential candidate

This article is about an election that will be held this year. To understand this article, you should know what happened before. There were three major candidates, Ms. Park, Mr. Moon, and Mr. Ahn. By some reason, Mr. Moon and Mr. Ahn decided to unify. There were some conflict between them, but on December 6th, Mr. Ahn declared that he will help Mr. Moon, and complete the unification because he thought it is the way to respect his supporters. Mr. Ahn's helping Mr. Moon may make a lot of differences, because Mr. Ahn got a lot of support from young generations, and political independents.

I think Mr. Ahn would make big difference, too. I'm very curious who will be the president. There are funny people's saying about this election. That is they will leave Korea if Ms. Park becomes a president. Anyways there are only 13 days before election, so I hope the best fit person would be the president of Korea.

This article is about Egypt and their president. Egypt's president, Mohamed Morsy, recently declared a decree that slashes judges' authority as an "unprecedented attack", and reinforce presidential powers. Egypt's highest judicial body slammed his decree. Morsy's office said that his decree is aimed at "preserving the impartiality of the judiciary... to avoid politicizing it". Some judges, like nongovernmental group Judges for Egypt, has denounced calls for a strike. however, another judicial group, the general assembly of the Egypt Judges Club, has called for just such a nationwide strike in all courts and prosecution offices. The division has already taken its tool on Egypt's economy, with the country's toke market closing almost 10% lower Sunday at the end of the trading day, the market's first since Morsy's power consolidation.

I think think presidential power should not be reinforced, because I think president has enough strong power even now. Their term is six years, and I think this is one of things that shows president of Egypt has stronger power than other presidents have. And as we saw, Egypt's economy is becoming harder because of the situation. So I think president should stop doing that, and make everything in order.

This article introduced Saenuri Party presidential candidate Park Geun-hye's new policy. Her new policy was focused on women, family, and their children. Her biggest promise was giving free college tuition for third child. She  promised to assistance in the buying milk powder and diapers for low-income families, expansion of obstetric clinics in rural areas, and increase of day care assistance. Also she talked about women's equal rights. She said "The knowledge-based society of 21st century is an era in which how women's potential is utilized will determine the competitive edge of the nation. I will create a society where women are worked and judged equally as men". The two key strains of Park's policy were fighting discrimination against women, creating an environment friendly to child-rearing and non-traditional families.

I think many law-income families and women with three children may vote for her. I think this is a good promises, but I'm not sure those would be actually become true. Many university students are having some movements or campaigns to reduce college tuition. So I think if she has that much money to give free college tuition for third child, than it will be better to reduce some of college tuition. There are more people who wants to reduce college tuition, so she will get more supporters than give all college tuition for third child.

Maryland voters to decide whether in-state tuition applies to illegal immigrants

This article introduces a men. He is a university student, and he was the top of his high school class. However, he had a difference with other friends. That difference is that his parents are illegal immigrants. He and his family came to America when he was 12 years old. Even he is an immigrants, he doesn't feel any differences from his "legal" classmates in the state. He feels like he is a fully American. But there are some worries that says opening door for people like him to receive in-state tuition could invite a mass "giveaway" to illegal immigrants at taxpayers' expense. Maryland voters are deciding the issue. By this, whether illegal immigrants can receive in-state tuition rates at state colleges will be determined. For this, anti-immigration groups contested the law and collected enough signatures.

I think illegal immigrants should get in-state tuition, because they usually don't have money. For the most part, the came America to earn money. If in-state tuition is not given to illegal immigrants, they may not able to go to the universities. Then, they may not get good jobs with good pays, then finally they may be still poor. If it passes, many people will try to use it inappropriately, but if the state makes another law to stop that, then it will be fine. So I think in-state tuition should be given to illegal immigrants.

Man uses Google to get info of nearly 9M people

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol
11.1.2012

- from Korea JoongAng Daily

This article is about an unemployed 37 years old man amassed almost 9 million people's personal information in the past two years. He, who has no expertise in computer hacking, could amass that much information by googling. He could gain access to certain managerial areas of web sites by putting "admin" into the Google search bar along with names and personal information of site membersPolice arrested him for illegally compiling nearly 8.84 million personal profiles from over 100 web sites. Police also said about the sites that was hacked that they are investigating if the sites paid no attention on personal information, and if there is any infringement, they will give criminal penalty to them.

When I read is article first, I was very surprised that he had no expertise in computer hacking, but only used Google. Than, I was surprised again at amount he hacked. I think he is worth to be punished. We have right to private, and he invaded it. Also, I think it is right for site owners to be punished, too. The article says that the information could be protected if site owners putted more attention to security.

Do Hollywood endorsements matter?

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol
10.25.2012

- from foxnews

This article's topic is Do Hollywood endorsements matter? and they answered a question; Do they matter? Can celebrity appearances, endorsements and emails move the needle? The article's answer is "it depends". It says that people "don't want to think Hollywood celebrities are telling them how to vote. They understand their expertise is outside the political world". However, there are exceptions, and Oprah Winfrey is one. She made many politicians famous including Barack Obama. The other exception is that celebrities can give a boost with certain targeted audiences. Both Romney and Obama has many celebrities who help them.

I think celebrities helps a lot. I don't know about U.S., but in Korea, celebrities impacts a lot. Of course there are many people who don't get any influence by celebrities, but more people get influence by them. So i think it will be beneficial if candidates make celebrities to their team.

Security official for U.S. Embassy in Yemen killed

Allisa Hwang Eun sol
10.11.2012

Yemeni protesters try to break through the U.S. embassy in Sanaa during a protest on September 13.

This article is about the death of a security official for U.S. Embassy in Yemen, Qassem Aqlan. He was shot dead on his way to walk. The article says that the killing of Qassem Aqlan shows the hallmarks of al Qaeda. It also says that Gunmen was on a motorcycle, and motorcycle attacks are currently al Qaeda's main tactic. This article says that al Qaeda is sanding message by Aqlan's death. the message is that if you are working with the Americans you will be targeted no matter who you are.

I was very sad about the death of Aqlan. It is very scary thing. I surprised that al Qaeda was still acting, because I thought that they were dead or having time for long rest after Bin Laden's death. I think many people will quit their job because of the message that al Qaeda sent. that is very scary. I hope no more people would die like this.

How to Win Presidential Debate?

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol
10.4.2012

-What Each Candidate Must Do to Win

 from Fox News

Obama and Romney Speaking
This article is about what Romney and Obama must do to win on this presidential debate. It first says about Obama. According to this article, Obama is good in a platform speech, but most people who are good at long speech are not that good at do speech quickly, so he needs to be careful of that. This article also says that “His job here is to not cede ground and avoid any huge errors. He can win this by not losing, he will play a more cautions game, defend what he has done, acknowledge difficulties and detail plans”.

This article says about Romney that "this is his opportunity to change the trajectory of the campaign and re-shift the focus back on the economy". Also, in this article, Masket said that “I expect him to attack Obama on economic issues ... He also needs to work to rehabilitate his own image after the fallout of the '47%' comment caught on camera.” He didn't provide enough details his policy ideas and campaign goals, so he need to specify his plans. It also says Romney has to work to shape his answers to fit the time allotment while providing enough specifics and details. At the last ,he needs to "redirect the analysis and point it to what he cares about, show his level of credibility and detail his promise".

- 10 Rules for Winning a Debate

from CNN

Paul Begala says he's played a behind-the-scenes role in most of the presidential debates of the past 20 years.

This article says that to win the debate, people have to remember 10 rules. those 10 rules are 1. Debates are easy, so relax- debates are easier than news conferences, town-hall meetings or in-depth, one-on-one interviews on Sunday morning television. 2. Have one message that answers on "Why should we vote for you and not the other candidate?", 20 questions and 20 answers that supports that message. 3. Be familiar with everything related to the debate- familiarity brings comfort, comfort breeds confidence, and confidence delivers victory. 4. Don't cram. 5. Wit is sticky. 6. Remember that camera is always on- always be conscious of camera, and know what to do when the other candidate is attacking you. 7. Create a moment- give a direct address, fixing eyes on their opponent when launching a barb or looking directly into the camera. 8. Don't be a lawyer- structure that use in legal argument an political debate is different. 9. Small people make small points- have big points. 10. Debates are more often lost than win- have self-confidence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both articles were about how to win on this presidential debate, and the first one, from Fox News, is talking about two separated candidates, Romney and Obama. and the second one, from CNN, didn't separate them. It was interesting to read both articles and know about how would be the debate. Actually these two articles doesn't have any side. But the article from Fox New  is saying specifically what each person should do to win the election. But the article from CNN was talking about "Debate". It is saying about presidential debate, and it gave some examples from ancestors, but I think those rules also can be used on usual debate.

Senate passes sportsmen's bill in 84-7 vote

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol
9.27.2012

This article is about the sportsmen's bill that can help Democratic incumbent was passed. The bill is about allowing hunters to bring back 41 polar bear carcasses from Canada as big game trophies. The bill also permits more hunting and fishing on federal lands and let bow hunters cross federal land where hunting is not allowed.  Other provisions encourage federal land agencies to cooperate with sate. They also encourage local authorities to maintain shooting ranges, exclude ammunition and tackle from federal environmental laws that regulate lead, boost fish populations and protect animal habitat. This bill was passed in 84-7 vote.

I think this law will kill many animals since this is allowing and permitting more hunting and fishing. So I don't agree on this bill. This bill was passed in 84-7 vote, means 84 agreed and 7 did not. I think these 84 may all Democratic Party, because this bill can help Democratic Party.

Police begin enforcing controversial Arizona immigration measure

Arizona police began to enforce a controversial "show-your-papers" provision of a state law to illegal immigration as civil rights groups prepared to document allegations of racial profiling. By this, now police in the border state with Mexico have power to check anyone they stop for any reason and suspect of being in the country illegally. Karen Tunmlin, who manages attorney with the National Immigration Law Center, said that "It's definitely a new phase, and one where we'll be looking very carefully to monitor for civil rights violations in the state".

I think checking whether people are illegal immigrants or not is good, but that should not invade human rights. So I think they should have to protect human rights very well. And I think there should not be any segregation to immigrants.

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol

This article is about Vietnam prime minister punished three bloggers who wrote bad things about government, especially the prime minister. so the author of this article says it may be the reason why the prime minister punished them.

I was surprised that Vietnam blog and computer. I thought Vietnam is very undeveloped country, but actually it was more developed than i thought. I think people who write malicious think should be get punished. There are many people who suicide by that malicious comment or internet bullying. So I think the government should punish those people.

Romney Chooses Ryan for Republican Ticket

Allisa Hwang
9.6.2012

This article said that Mitt Romney selected Representative Paul Ryan as his running mate for the November election. This article is supporting Romney and Ryan. Especially this article focused on Ryan, and it said "He is the first member of the House of Representatives in almost 30 years to be on a major-party presidential ticket."

I think Romney chose Ryan well. I think Ryan is a good and amazing person. The thing made me surprise was that he is the same age as Romney's oldest son. I don't know that well about American candidates, but my favorite candidate is Romney.

In wake of mass shootings, Republican Party platforms calls for expanded rights for gun owners

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol
8.30.2012

This article is about Republican party's platform is about protecting gun owners' rights. The news says that "says gun bearers don’t have to retreat if they feel threatened in a public place". This shows well what the republican party is trying to say. Many others were surprised about this platform, and even David Keene, president of the National Rifle Association, said "this year’s Republican platform is even stronger in terms of dedicating a major party to the protection of the Second Amendment."

I think protecting gun owners' rights are not necessary. Protecting blacks', or women's rights are necessary because they didn't choose to be so. However, gun owners choose to have a gun. If they don't like unfairness, they can be treated fairly by just not having a gun. So i think it is unnecessary to protect gun owners' right.

Are unmarried women the key to the election?

Allisa Hwang Eun Sol

Are unmarried women the key to the election?

T
his article said that nowadays unmarried women population is increasing, and historically they didn't participated to the election. So if a candidate convince unmarried women and get support from them, he may win the election.

As the article says, i think to convince unmarried women or every young men is the most important and effective thing to do before an election. Defining young men as 18~29, their population takes a lot of parts in US. Only among those who has suffrage, except too old people, who seems will not vote, their percentage may grow even larger. So I think to win the election, candidates or parties should convince and persuade young men first.
